The total net import the 3 major grains of China last year was around 19 million tons. In the first 7 months this year, the total was 11.439 million tons. Moreover, in 2011, China became a net importer of corn and after that, in this year, China might exceed Egypt to become the world’s largest importer of wheat. It is estimated by China National Grain and Oils Information Center that the import volume of wheat this year will reach 6.5 million tons. There have been difficulties in grain production within China. Besides, the room for increasing import is limited and the effect of overseas investment might not be shown quickly. Therefore, although China has been increasing its domestic production of grains for 10 years in a row, it is still very hard for China to “feed itself”.
